The Problem
Massachusetts is a leader in energy efficiency and clean energy programs. However, not everyone has benefited equally.
Communities of color, low-to-moderate income households, renters and their landlord and non-English speakers have been left behind, with high energy costs, drafty homes, and more pollution in these communities.
Meanwhile the benefits of good-paying green jobs in our state’s growing clean energy economy are also inequitably distributed. Women, people of color and multilingual individuals are underrepresented.
This means communities are missing out on family-supporting careers, and our state is missing out on critical perspectives and diverse talent needed to ensure all communities benefit from energy programs.
Many people in these same groups—low income residents, seniors, and immigrants—are being targeted by electricity supply scams and are paying way too much for energy—contributing to financial stress and difficult choices between energy, food and medicine.
